Minutes of the AGM 2007
Minutes of AGM of GSS – Chapter of St Birinus held on 14th March 2007 at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Kidlington.
Present: Bros. Trevor Langrish, Sid Cox, Stan Goodwin, Bruce Armour, Jack Webster, Ben Heffer (Chair); Sr. Jenny Pittaway; Cllr. Clive Tilling; Revd Jason St John Nicolle; Supporters Pam Cooper, Lily Smith, Mrs Armour and Naomi Heffer.
1. Opening Prayer – Fr Jason opened the meeting with prayer.
2. Apologies for Absence – apologies were received from Revd Dennis Mason.
3. Minutes of the AGM 2006 – the minutes of the meeting held on 15th March 2006 were read and approved.
4. Matters Arising – there were no matters arising.
5. Secretary’s Report – Bro Ben Heffer presented the Secretary’s Report.
6. Treasurer’s Report – Bro Trevor presented the audited accounts and Treasurer's Report, which were approved and accepted. The meeting recorded a vote of thanks to Fr Dennis for auditing the accounts.
Fr Jason proposed a vote of thanks to Bro Trevor for his work as treasurer and Bro Ben for his work as secretary over the last year.
7. Election of Chapter Officers – There being no other nominations, Bros Ben Heffer and Trevor Langrish were re-elected as Secretary and Treasurer respectively.
8. Chapter Programme 2007 – Bro Ben reported that no meetings had been arranged as yet. Attendances at meetings during 2006 have been very poor and there are now insufficient servers to celebrate the Guild Office with the appropriate ceremonial. It was noted that in order to continue to function as a chapter, we are required to sing (or say) the Guild Office at least three times a year. It was agreed that we would continue to meet regularly but that we try to concentrate our efforts on one particular church to build up support there. It was noted that 2007 is the 90th anniversary of the chapter and it was agreed to hold a special service around the time of the Patronal Festival in September, to which neighbouring chapters in Group 9 could be invited.
9. Any Other Business – Bro Ben advised the meeting that the GSS Easter Festival & AGM is to be held on 14th April at St Alban's Holborn and the Autumn Festival on 17th November at St Woolos Cathedral, Newport. It was agreed to order additional copies of the GSS brochure to be distributed to local churches as part of the chapter’s publicity campaign. Bro Ben drew the meeting’s attention to the Howard Gadd Memorial Fund that gives grants to churches for the purchase of servers’ robes.
10. Closing Prayer – the meeting was closed with prayer.
Present: Bros. Trevor Langrish, Sid Cox, Stan Goodwin, Bruce Armour, Jack Webster, Ben Heffer (Chair); Sr. Jenny Pittaway; Cllr. Clive Tilling; Revd Jason St John Nicolle; Supporters Pam Cooper, Lily Smith, Mrs Armour and Naomi Heffer.

Secretary's Report 2007
The chapter roll has dropped from 39 last year to 34, comprising 20 members, 1 priest associate, 11 life members and 2 probationers.
During the last year, we record with sadness the deaths of Bro John Stack, for many years our chapter organist and a loyal supporter of the chapter; of Fr Geoffrey Pinnock, one of our priest associates; and Phyllis Webster from St Barnabas, a long time supporter of the Guild. In November we received the sad news that our old friend and supporter, Fr Christopher Walker, had been diagnosed with cancer. Please remember him in your prayers. In May, we were pleased to admit Sr Jenny Dowdeswell from Kidlington as a Probationer member.
In addition to our members, we are grateful to a number of friends and supporters that attend our meetings. Indeed, those who now come to our chapter meetings are principally friends and supporters.
I have continued to correspond by letter and email with all those on our roll and this has helped them to keep in touch regardless of whether they are able to attend meetings. We do, however, need to improve attendances at chapter meetings if we are to continue meeting and this is something we need to consider carefully in the days to come.
Since our last AGM, the Chapter has met 5 times.
In May we met at St Mary Magdalen’s Church, Oxford for Guild Office & Benediction in honour of Our Lady. Fr Jason officiated for the office and Fr Peter Groves, preached and gave Benediction.
In July we met at St Margaret’s, Binsey for Guild Office. Fr Tony Knox officiated and gave the address. This meeting was very poorly attended, but those that came enjoyed a drink afterwards in the Perch.
In September, the chapter hosted a Young Servers' Sleepover event at St Mary's Church, Kidlington. Twelve young people enjoyed a range of activities relating to serving. Also in September, we celebrated our Patronal Feast day with Guild Office & Benediction at St Barnabas’ Church, Oxford. Fr Jason officiated and we were pleased to welcome back Fr Dennis Mason to give the address.
In October, Fr Jason led a Quiet Day on the theme of worship at St Mary's Church, Kidlington, which was much appreciated by the group of people which attended from the parish.
In November we remembered the departed members of the chapter with a mass at St Andrew’s Church, Headington. We are grateful for the clergy and people of St Andrews for welcoming us to their weeknight mass and providing the refreshments afterwards.
In January, we met at St Alban’s Church, Cowley for Guild Office & Benediction. Fr Adam Romanis officiated and preached. Our thanks to him for welcoming us and his hospitality.
I am grateful to all the parish clergy who have welcomed us to their churches this last year and led our worship. Indeed, thank you to all who have contributed to the life of the chapter in whatever way, particularly, to Fr Jason, our Chaplain, Professor David Murray who kindly plays the organ for us at many of our meetings and to Bro Trevor Langrish for his work as treasurer.

Treasurer's Report 2007
2006 was again a quiet year with regard to the chapter's finances, which are sill fairly healthy - income was £105.00 (£32.35 down on that for 2005). This is because, in 2005, we received donations for a retirement gift for Fr Dennis Mason (our former Chapter Chaplain) - an item not present in 2006.
Expenditure was £278.05 (£142.39 up on that for 2006). This increase is accounted for by the cost of a new cope for the Chapter Chaplain and the organising of the young servers' sleepover. The deposit account remains untouched and is accumulating interest - the balance on it is currently £1,132.26. This leads to our total assets for the end of 2006 being £1,366.49.
I still enjoy being Chapter Treasurer and am willing to continue. Membership subscriptions and magazine subscriptions are being collected centrally by direct debit and should no longer be paid to me. However, I would gratefully receive any chapter donations.
Finally, I would like to thank Bro Ben Heffer for all his hard work as Chapter Secretary. I would also like to thank, in his absence, Fr Dennis Mason for auditing the accounts for 2006, therby checking that I am doing business correctly. Bro Trevor Langrish, Treasurer.
