A pilgrim from the northern seas -
What joy for me to seek alone
The wondrous Temple, and the throne
Of Him who holds the awful keys!

When, bright with purple and with gold,
Come priest and holy Cardinal,
And borne above the heads of all
The gentle Shepherd of the Fold.

O joy to see before I die
The only God-anointed King,
And hear the silver trumpets ring
A triumph as He passes by.

Or at the altar of the shrine
Holds high the mystic sacrifice,
And shows a God to human eyes
Beneath the veil of bread and wine.

15th November - St Barnabas, Oxford

The chapter met in the beautiful church of St Barnabas for Guild Office and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament with special prayers for the faithful departed. The address was given by Fr Richard Martin and the officiant was Fr William Whyte.

During Benediction, Fr Richard recited the names of departed friends and members of the chapter from our chantry book.

Afterwards we enjoyed refreshments kindly provide by the people of St Barnabas.

28th September - St Mary's, Kidlington

The chapter celebrated the eve of the feast of St Michael & All Angels with sung Guild Office and sermon in the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Kidlington. Revd Canon Anthony Ellis officiated and preached. In his sermon Fr Anthony referred to the numerous mentions of angels in Holy Scripture. Visitations by angels in our own time appear to be much rarer; however, perhaps this is because we fail to recognise them. Angels are messengers of God and people we meet in our own daily life speak to us in the kindness of their deeds and the witness they bear.

Afterwards those present enjoyed refreshments together.

Present: Canon Anthony Ellis; Bros. Trevor Langrish, Bruce Armour, Sid Cox and Ben Heffer; Srs. Susan Greenaway, Jenny Dowdeswell; and seven supporters.

Mary Magdalen pray for us

She, from whom seven demons he drove out,
now in devotion kneels at his feet;
with tears of love she blesses her dear Lord;
the house is filled with costly perfume sweet.

And then caresses with her hair, the man
who for her sake th'accusers took to task;
she caught in sin and by the crowd condemned,
yet none so sinless the first stone to cast.

In time to Bethany’s home the master comes
where busy Martha seeks without delay
to please, yet Mary with her Lord remains
and listening serves in much the better way.

She follows her dear Lord to Calvary
and by the cross in faithful vigil spends
his three sad hours of torment, pain and death;
the nails and spear his sacred body rends.

Alone and early that first Easter morn,
the stone rolled back, the tomb an empty space,
with hope she looks into the gardener’s eyes,
he speaks her name; she sees her saviour’s face.

O Mary, help us listen at his feet,
he who your fallen dignity restored;
lifted from sin, forgiven and set aright
like you to witness to the risen Lord.

Treasurer's Report 2011

In 2010, there was little activity with the chapter’s finances, which are still healthy – income was £88.35 (£24.37 down on that for 2009). This is because we had less in collections. Expenditure was £25.00 (£139.48 down on that for 2009). This was due principally to there being no Secretary’s expenses to show. The deposit account remains untouched and is accumulating interest – the balance on it is currently £1,151.54. This leads to our total assets for the end of 2010 being £1,395.83.

Secretary's Report 2011

At the beginning of the year, the chapter roll stood at 26 comprising 16 members, nine life members and one associate member. During the course of the year we have gained a priest associate, Revd Canon Paul Berrett, who has been transferred to us from another chapter and lost one life member, Bro Bill Quinell, who sadly passed away on 5th March. The chapter roll therefore remains at 26 all told.

William Quinell

I regret to have to report that Bill Quinell one of our longest serving members has died. He passed peacefully away at the Churchill Hospital on March 5th after several years' battle with prostate cancer.

Bill was for many years a leading member of the serving team at St Barnabas and frequently acted as chapter MC. Following the death of his dear wife Eileen, he served less often and played less of a role in the running of the chapter but remained a Life Member.

Bill's funeral is to be held at Oxford Crematorium on Friday, 18th March at 1:15am. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to his family at this sad time.
Jesus mercy: Mary pray.
