Christmas 2012

Hail and blessed be the hour and moment at which the Son of God was born of a most pure Virgin at a stable at midnight in Bethlehem in the piercing cold.
At that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, to hear my prayers and grant my desires.
Through Jesus Christ and His most Blessed Mother.

A blessed, holy and peaceful Christmas to all our members and supporters from the chapter committee.

Bro. Sid Cox

I am sorry to report that Bro. Sid Cox of Didcot died in Sobell House, Oxford on 22nd March 2012.

Bro. Sid was a life member of the GSS and originally attended the Abingdon Chapter before its closure. Then for many years he attended St Birinus chapter meetings and frequently assisted at Guild Office in the serving team, usually as thurifer. Living in Didcot, he had the rather awkward journey by train, bus and by foot to get to Guild Offices in Kidlington, but that did not deter him and I know he really enjoyed coming to chapter meetings. Before retirement Sid worked at UKEA. His funeral service was held at St Peter’s  Church, Didcot where he was a faithful member of the church community and an altar server for many years.

Please remember Sid and his family in your prayers. May he and all the faithful departed rest in peace.

+ Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord: and let light perpetual shine upon them.

Prayer for Advent

Almighty God, grant this to your faithful:
that when your Anointed comes
we may greet him with a harvest of good works and be seated at his right hand
and share in his heavenly kingdom.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
Amen.

13th November - St John's Kidlington

We met to offer prayer for the departed members and supporters of our chapter in St John’s Church, Kidlington on the evening of Tuesday, 13th November. Revd William Whyte officiated. After singing the Guild Office Fr William gave and address and led us in prayer including a recitation of the chapter chantry book. We are grateful to him for leading our worship and to Revd Hilary Campbell for permitting us to meet in St John’s.

Present: Revd William Whyte; Bros. Ben Heffer, Trevor Langrish, Ken Belcher, Bruce Armour; Srs Susan Greenaway, Jenny Dowdeswell and four supporters.

Apologies: Stand Goodwin, Julian Calcutt, Jenny Pittaway, Angela Dean, Dennis Dean and Kim Clowesley.

5th September 2012 - Kidlington

The chapter met to celebrate its feast of title in the church of St Mary the Virgin, Kidlington on Wednesday, 5th September with sung Guild Office, procession and sermon. Revd Canon Anthony Ellis offciated and preached taking as his theme the mission of St Birinus of Dorchester.

Afterwards the chapter made a presentation to Canon Ellis to mark his forthcoming retirement and as a thank you for his help and support for the chapter during his time in Kidlington.

Present: Bros. Trevor Langrish, Ben Heffer, Dennis Dean; Srs, Jenny Dowdeswell, Susan Greenaway, Angela Dean; Fr. Anthony Ellis; and five friends and supporters.

Apologies: Bro. Bruce Armour and Mrs Armour. Bro Ken Belcher and Mrs Belcher.

30th May 2012 - Hampton Poyle

The chapter met to sing the Guild Office in the beautiful church of St Mary, Hampton Poyle on the Eve of the Feast of the Visitation.

Revd William Whyte was the officiant and preacher. In his sermon he relected on the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth both of whom were pregnant, drawing our attention to the fact that one was considered too old to bear children and the other possibly too young yet through God's grace both had become bearers of his message. As christians we have a responsibility to bring God to other people, not least we who are servants of the sanctuary. The future growth of our chapter and the Guild in general is dependent upon us making God real to people around us.

Afterwards we enjoyed some refreshments. We are grateful to Fr Whyte for leading our worship and to David Murray for paying the organ; and to Canon Anthony Ellis and the people of Hampton Poyle for making the church available to us.

Present: Revd William Whyte; Bros. Ben Heffer, Trevor Langrish, Ken Belcher and Dennis Dean; Srs. Susan Greenaway, Jenny Dowdeswell, Angela Dean; and seven friends and supporters.

Minutes of the Chapter AGM 2012

Minutes of AGM of GSS – Chapter of St Birinus held on 14th March 2012 at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Kidlington.

Present: Revd Canon Anthony Ellis; Bros. Trevor Langrish, Bruce Armour, Ben Heffer (chair), Ken Belcher, Dennis Dean and Kim Clowsley; Sr. Angela Dean; Mrs P Cooper and Mrs Barbara Belcher.

1. Opening Prayer – Bro. Ben Heffer opened the meeting with prayer.

2. Apologies for Absence – apologies were received from Srs. Jenny Dowdeswell and Susan Greenaway, Revd Jason St John Nicolle and Revd William Whyte.

3. Minutes of the AGM 2011 – the minutes of the meeting held on 16th March 2011 were read and approved. Proposed: Trevor Langrish. Seconded: Kim Clowsley.

4. Matters Arising – Bro Ben reported that in the event, we did not hold a meeting at Hampton Poyle as planned but instead met again at St Mary’s Kidlington. He advised that in accordance with the wishes of the meeting he had indeed written a note of appreciation to Fr Dennis. Donations to COF and the group councillor’s travel expenses had been sent as prescribed. We did not meet at St Peter’s, Didcot as we had considered we might.

5. Secretary’s Report – Bro Ben Heffer presented the Secretary’s Report. The roll stands at 24 comprising 14 members, eight life members and two associates. The chapter met four times in the year but attendances have been very poor with never more than 15 people at any one meeting. Bro Ben reported that Cllr Clive Tilling had resigned from the GSS and joined the Ordinariate and that the group counsellor position was now vacant. He extended thanks to the clergy particularly those from Kidlington for their support and to Bro Trevor Langrish for his work as Treasurer and to David Murray for playing the organ.

6. Treasurer’s Report – Bro Trevor presented the audited accounts and Treasurer's Report, which were approved and accepted. Proposed: Dennis Dean. Seconded: Ken Belcher. Bro. Trevor reported that Michael Ling had kindly agreed to audit the accounts for us and had suggested some amendments in presentation. At the end of the year, the chapter balance stood at £1,262.84.

7. Election of Chapter Officers – There being no other nominations, Bros Ben Heffer and Trevor Langrish were re-elected as Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Accepted unanimously.

8. Chapter Programme 2012 – No meetings had yet been arranged and Bro Ben asked the meeting whether given the poor attendances it was worth continuing. If the chapter was to close, it would be unlikely to re-open again and it was agreed that we should remain open even if we did not hold meetings. It was suggested we could amalgamate with another chapter, but the nearest ones are still some distance away. Ideally, a viable chapter is expected to meet four times a year. It was agreed that, given most members come from Kidlington, we should restrict our activities to St Mary’s, St John’s and Hampton Poyle. Fr Anthony was amenable to this and Bro Ben undertook to make the arrangements. Tuesday evenings at St John’s are preferable and Wednesday evenings at St Mary’s. Hampton Poyle is largely free in the evenings at any time.

9. Any Other Business – It was agreed to send a donation from chapter funds of £70 to the Candidates for Ordination Funds (COF). The meeting discussed the prospect of making a charitable donation from chapter funds to support a local initiative relating to altar serving and/or liturgy preferably targeted at encouraging young servers. It was agreed to bear this mind should such an opportunity arise. Nominations were invited for the post of Group Counsellor, which should eb addressed to the Secretary General.

10. Closing Prayer – Fr Anthony closed the meeting with a blessing.

Chapter Treasurer's Report 2012

In 2011, again there was little activity with the chapter’s finances, which are still healthy – income was £63.87 (£24.48 down on that for 2012). This is because we had no chapter donations, no membership subscriptions paid in (therefore none paid out); however, there was an increase in collections. Expenditure was £196.86 (£171.86 up on that for 2010). This was due principally to the Secretary’s expenses for both 2010 and 2011 coming out of the current account in 2011; there were also donations to the Candidates for Ordination Fund and to C Tilling to cover his travel expenses as our group counsellor. The deposit account remains untouched and is accumulating interest – the balance on it is currently £1,151.96. This leads to our total assets for the end of 2011 being £1,262.84.

I still enjoy being Chapter Treasurer and am willing to continue. Membership subscriptions and magazine subscriptions are, as usual, being collected centrally by direct debit and should preferably not be paid to me, though I can pass on payment from members who would rather not use direct debit. However, I would gratefully receive and chapter donations.

Finally, I would like to thank Bro. Ben Heffer for all his hard work as chapter secretary. I would also like to thank, in his absence, Mr Michael Ling for auditing the accounts for 2011, thereby checking that I am doing business correctly.

Bro Trevor Langrish
Chapter Treasurer

Secretary's Report 2012

The chapter roll remains unchanged at 24 comprising 14 members, eight life members and two associate members.

The chapter met for worship four times in 2011. On 16th March we met here in St Mary's Church, Kidlington to celebrate the Guild Office. The officiant and preacher was the Revd Canon Anthony Ellis to whom we are grateful for hosting the event. Afterwards the members retired to the refectory for the chapter's annual general meeting. Just 11 members and supporters were present

On 24th May the chapter celebrated Our Lady's Month of May with the Regina Caeli and Guild Office at the Church of St Michael, Blewbury. Revd Jason St John Nicolle, Rector of the Churn Benefice officiated and gave the address. Just nine people were present, and only two of those were altar servers.

On 28th September we were again here at St Mary's, Kidlington when we celebrated the eve of the feast of St Michael & All Angels with sung Guild Office and sermon. Revd Canon Anthony Ellis officiated and preached. 14 members and supporters were present.

On 15th November we met in the beautiful church of St Barnabas for Guild Office and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament with special prayers for the faithful departed. The address was given by Fr Richard Martin and the officiant was Fr William Whyte. During Benediction, Fr Richard recited the names of departed friends and members of the chapter from our chantry book. We were grateful to the people of St Barnabas for providing refreshments.

Support has again been poor this year with typically less than 20 people attending our services and we are grateful for the presence of some loyal supporters. I wonder whether we remain viable as a chapter.

I regret to report that Cllr Clive Tilling has resigned as group councillor and left the GSS. He has, after much thought and prayer decided to join the Ordinariate. We wish him well in his new spiritual home and we are grateful for his hard work for the guild and this chapter. The Secretary General has asked me to bring the vacant position to your attention; anyone wishing to take on this role should contact the Secretary General.

I am grateful to the clergy of the Kidlington Team Ministry for leading our worship and preaching during the year; Canon Ellis and Fr William. Their support is very much appreciated. Thank you to all who support our services especially Prof David Murray, who plays the organ so well for us. Thank you also to Bro Trevor Langrish our MC and for his invaluable work as our chapter treasurer.

Bro Ben Heffer, Chapter Secretary
